Reflection for Sunday 05/7/06

REFLECTION:
This gospel in which Jesus declares “I am the Good Shepherd” is very comforting. Jesus assures us that he watches over us and protects us from harm. He says he knows each of us intimately just as he and the Father know each other. These are gentle, affirming words. But Jesus also states “I will lay down my life for the sheep.” There is a fierce determination in these words that is highlighted by our awareness that Jesus did exactly that. Jesus continued to travel from town to town caring for his followers even as he realized his enemies were planning to harm him. When Jesus identifies himself as a Good Shepherd he claims to be a provider for his sheep and even more importantly a courageous protector even to his own death. Trusting in Jesus, our Good Shepherd can give us peace as we deal with the challenges of our lives. We are never alone. He will lend us strength to deal with difficulties and rejoice with us when things go well. This Good Shepherd who loves us so much that he chose to die for us will not ever abandon us.

1. Whom are you shepherding in your life right now, and who shepherds you?
2. Who has been like a shepherd to you by their example? For whom could you be a shepherd?

PRAYER:
Good Shepherd, protect my loved ones from the evils of this world. Help us all to trust more confidently in your loving care. Amen.
