REFLECTION:
When Christ appeared to the disciples after his resurrection he offered them gifts they desperately needed. They had been horrified by Jesus’ crucifixion and were hiding from the authorities, afraid that they would be arrested, too. They must have been reassured when Jesus joined them in that locked room. But Jesus knew he would soon return to the Father. “Peace be with you,” he said, aware that the peace that he offered would allow them to let go of their fears and begin to think constructively. They needed to begin to look ahead and to make plans. Jesus breathed on them, filling them with the Holy Spirit and the gift of forgiveness. Now they would have the power to forgive sins. But first, they may have needed to forgive themselves for having distanced themselves from Jesus during his passion and death. Once they forgave themselves and accepted Jesus’ forgiveness they were empowered to continue the ministry that Jesus had begun. We are Jesus’ disciples and he loves us and knows our needs. Let us open our hearts and accept the gifts of grace he so lovingly offers us.
1. When has the Holy Spirit given you the strength to act with courage?
2. When and where do you need the Holy Spirit’s help to speak out?
PRAYER:
You know my strengths and weaknesses, Lord. Help me to be open to the gifts you have ready for me so that I may be a better witness to your truth and glory. Amen.
