REFLECTION:
The story of Jesus and the apostles in a boat when a storm blew up has classic human elements. The apostles were frightened by the storm and annoyed that Jesus was sleeping through it. They woke him, saying accusingly, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus immediately awakened and, with a few words, calmed the sea. Then Jesus responded to the apostles with impatience, “Why are you terrified? Do you not have faith?” When we are faced with serious difficulties how often do we say to Jesus, “Where are you? Don’t you care that I am afraid?” We, as did the apostles, forget that God has promised to be with us always. God didn’t guarantee that our lives would be smooth sailing but God did say he would never abandon us. He will be right in the boat with us. It is up to us to be open to the graces that God offers us every day of our lives. If we develop the habit of praying more often, listening carefully to God’s voice, perhaps in times of stress we may be better able to recognize and accept God’s loving care.
1. When has the Lord calmed the stormy seas of your life?
2. What fear would you like the Lord to help you overcome?
PRAYER:
God Almighty, help me to trust more fully in your promise to be with me always. Help me to be aware of your loving care for me all the days of my life. Amen.
