REFLECTION:
Scripture tells us of several confrontational exchanges between Jesus and various Jewish leaders. But the scribe who asked Jesus “Which is the first of all commandments?” seemed sincere. He listened closely and agreed with Jesus’ answer, “The first is this…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength…The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The scribe responded that living by those two commandments “is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Clearly Jesus and the scribe agreed that we are called to a love that is beyond legalism and empty ritual. This is a love that requires humbling oneself before the omnipotence of God and in loving service to each other. We, as followers of Christ, are called to live guided by these two commandments. We can begin by opening ourselves to the transforming grace of God. We can work to become more willing to give priority to the needs and wants of others. God speaks to us in these commandments and will be with us in our struggle to live by them.

1. Why is love of neighbor as important as love of God?
2. When do you show that you love God and your neighbor with your whole heart?

PRAYER:
Jesus, I want to live according to your Word. Instill in me the desire to love God with my entire being and the will to love myself. Amen.
