REFLECTION:
What do you think the friends of the Magi thought as the magi left their homes to follow a star that was supposedly leading them to the newborn king of the Jews? Did their friends scoff and think they were embarking on a fool’s journey? The Magi were respected, educated men but the trip they were undertaking was full of dangers – bad weather, wild animals, thieves, hostile governments. Their families must have been concerned. Yet the Magi were drawn by the hope the star offered them. They were eager to approach the newborn king and share in the new life he would initiate. When they found Jesus, a babe in a straw-filled manger, surrounded by farm animals they weren’t daunted. They must have expected a more aristocratic setting with guards protecting the royal child but they saw the truth before them. With touching humility they prostrated themselves before Jesus. These wealthy intellectuals who had traveled a great distance recognized and trusted that this baby was going to change the world and they rejoiced in this good news. What risks are we willing to take as we follow the light who is Jesus?

1. What insights about your own faith have you gained from learning about other faith traditions?
2. What could you do to be like a star and lead someone to know about Jesus?

PRAYER:
Dear Jesus, grant me courage as I struggle to follow you. Help me to hope always in your light despite the distractions of this material world. Amen.
