REFLECTION:
It started as an ordinary day for Simon Peter. He had been out on his boat fishing all night with no luck. He was on the shore washing his nets when we saw a crowd of people approaching. Peter was probably surprised when the man named Jesus climbed into his boat and asked him to push off shore a short distance. Simon Peter listened closely as Jesus proceeded to address the crowd. Then Jesus told him to take the boat out to deeper waters and cast his nets. Peter protested, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing; but at your command I will lower the nets.” Simon Peter was astonished as they pulled in their nets bulging with a huge catch. Having heard Jesus’ words and observed his actions, Peter realized that Jesus was no ordinary man and recognized his own unworthiness to be in Jesus’ presence. Peter’s exclamation, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am sinful man” was heartfelt. Peter had been touched with grace and became aware that his life was never going to be the same.
1. When have you felt inadequate to a task or role you were given? How did you respond?
2. When have you been asked to do something you felt might be too hard for you? What did you do?
PRAYER:
Lord, I trust your love for me despite my unworthiness. Grant me the grace to hear your word and the courage to follow wherever you lead me. Amen.
