READINGS
First Reading: 1 Kings 19:1b, 19-21
Second Reading: Galatians 5:1, 13-18
Gospel: Luke 9:51-62
REFLECTION:
Luke tells us that “When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem.” And it became clear that there was an urgency that was driving Jesus’ actions. He answered harshly those who wanted to take time to bury the dead or say good-bye to their family before they followed him. There was no time or energy to spare. Jesus was requiring absolute commitment from his followers. Many must have thought Jesus was asking too much. And if we are honest, his words are not easy to hear today. We want to follow Jesus but we have a long list of other responsibilities that require our attention. When we are through with school, when the kids are grown, when we retire, then we will have more time to pray and do good works. But Jesus is asking for a commitment now, not later. God is fully aware of our responsibilities but God is asking us to put serving God first. This commitment will free us rather than limit us. Somehow giving ourselves in love frees us to be and do all that God intends for us.
1. When have you faltered or looked back during your journey of faith?
2. What can you do to be a stronger follower of Jesus this week?
PRAYER:
Holy Lord, I commit to serving you all the days of my life. Forgive me when I falter and call me back to serving you in faith and gratitude. Amen.
