REFLECTION:
Humility is a virtue that we often misunderstand. We confuse it with a false modesty that denies our abilities and our accomplishments. A truly humble person recognizes and is grateful for the gifts God has provided. There is no need to boast of these gifts because the humble person knows they were neither earned nor deserved. The gifts came freely from a loving God. Vanity, on the other hand, often gives rise to an inflated sense of importance. This may lead to embarrassment as the vain person is “put in his/her place” by those who are judged more important by others. Or vanity may lead us to be disdainful of those who seem of little value to us. This, too, is risky because we are cutting ourselves off from a wealth of opportunities to learn and to grow. Our Christian community will thrive as we learn to accept, to use and to be grateful for our personal gifts and recognize and appreciate the gifts of others. Humility is a virtue worth cultivating as we work together to serve the Lord in love and hope.

1. Has the hunger for status and influence in the world around you endangered your life as a Christian?
2. Does it make you a better person to be chosen first for a team or some other honor? Why or why not.

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, help me to recognize the talents you have given me. Teach me to use these gifts wisely and generously. Amen.
