REFLECTION:
The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is as pertinent today as when Jesus first proclaimed it. In Jesus’ story the rich man dressed in the finest clothing and dined on gourmet meals. He also was completely indifferent to the poor man starving at his door. It was for this indifference that Jesus condemned the rich man. Most of us lead comfortable lives. We may not be rich but we have much more than most of the people in the world. Yet it is so very easy to avoid thinking about needy people. We change the channel or close the newspaper so we don’t have to see the hungry children or homeless families. It all seems overwhelming, far beyond our power to make a difference. But Jesus seems to be telling us that we must care about each other, even strangers in our community and people in faraway countries. We are invited to share our time and our resources with a generous heart. We are called to do whatever we can, no matter how little it might be. We must trust that God will make our gifts sufficient.
1. What are the “rewards” of caring for the needs of the poor?
2. What is one thing you and your family could do this week to help those who are poor or sick?
PRAYER:
Touch my heart, Dear Lord, with your spirit of generosity. Release me of the fears that keep me from sharing with those who are in need. Amen.
