REFLECTION:
Have you ever put yourself in the place of one of the characters in the story of the Prodigal Son? Have you imagined the joy and relief of the father when he sighted his long-lost son returning home? Have you felt the shame and desperation of that son when he decided to return home? Or shared his happiness when he realized his father loved him and forgave his transgressions? Have you connected with the anger and the hurt of the older son as he saw his brother being welcomed home? We admire the father’s repentance but we tend to judge the older brother harshly. But can’t we understand his feelings. Don’t we sometimes feel that our efforts are taken for granted? Don’t we sometimes decide who is worthy of forgiveness or love? Jesus is assuring us that we can live trusting in the love of a God who cherishes us.
1. When have you persistently sought after a member of your family who has lost his or her way?
2. Have you ever felt you were not getting credit for your good works? What did you do?
PRAYER:
Merciful God, I stand before you aware of my sinfulness. I am humbled by your love for me and trust in your providential care all the days of my life. Amen.
