REFLECTION:
The story of Zacchaeus is one of hope and mercy. Zacchaeus was an unlikely person to be visited by Jesus. He was a tax collector who took advantage of others. His wealth was derived from the suffering of the taxpayers. He was despised as a public sinner. He came to see Jesus out of curiosity unlike many in the crowd who came to learn about salvation. And yet it was Zacchaeus whom Jesus singled out. We probably shouldn’t be surprised. Jesus has made it clear that he wants everyone to be redeemed. Jesus told the crowd, “…the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.” How comforting those words are. Haven’t we all been lost? Aren’t we all sinners needing mercy, needing love, needing hope? Jesus reaches out to each of us just as he did to Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was amazed and transformed by the love he saw in Jesus. Jesus offers that same love to us. Let’s say “Yes! to Jesus.” Let’s open the door and welcome Jesus into our lives.
1. During the next week, what could you do to welcome someone who usually feels excluded?
2. Is there a child in your class or neighborhood who is left out of games and activities? What can you do?
PRAYER:
O Lord, I open my heart to you. I know that I am not worthy of your love but I am confident in your mercy. May your Spirit abide in me always. Amen.
