Reflection for Sunday 11/25/07

READINGS
First Reading: 2 Samuel 5:1-3
Second Reading: Colossians 1:12-20
Gospel: Luke 23:35-43

REFLECTION:
The Romans inscribed on Jesus’ cross the words, “This is the King of the Jews.” They surely thought this title absurd. After all, Jesus was a poor carpenter and itinerant preacher who had angered the Jewish leaders so much that they arranged to have him arrested, tortured and now executed. This “king” was hanging on a cross between two common thieves, subject to the mockery and ridicule of passersby. His influential friends? His loyal subjects? Only his mother and a few heartbroken companions stood near and they were ordinary folk, powerless to help. But somehow in the midst of this terrible day, one of the thieves asked Jesus, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” How did he recognize the kingship of Jesus in the bloodied, dying man next to him? What allowed him to hope for salvation through Jesus? It must have been God’s grace and mercy that opened his heart to the truth. God, in his limitless generosity, freely, lovingly offers us, too, the grace that will lead us to know and serve Christ our King.

1. Following the example of Jesus, what is the best way to exercise your authority over other people?
2. What qualities would a good leader have? Which of these are you trying to develop?

PRAYER:
Christ our King, I bow before your power and your glory. I am humbled by the love you offer me. Teach me, my King, how to serve you well. Amen.
