ASCENSION SYMPATHY

LENT
Ashes to Ashes program includes prayer service with choir members from Ascension and Greenmont Oak Park, burning palms for ashes for Ash Wednesday, activities and King Cake. This program is on Sunday, February 3 from 1:15-3:15 p.m. at Greenmont Oak Park Church. To make reservations call Lois Keil at 299-0257.
GET READY FOR A FRUITFUL LENT!
All women are invited to a Women’s Day of Reflection on February 2, from 8:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Ascension. The day will include talks, Mass, lunch, reflection time and opportunity for confession. Speakers include Jeanne Von Erden, Psy.D, and Fr. Ron Haft. The focus of the day will be strengthening marriage and family life, and offer practical advice and insight for growing in our roles as wives and mothers. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Students preparing for First Reconciliation will be participating in Zacchaeus Day activities on Monday, January 28. Pickup time will be 5:45 p.m. instead of the normal 5:30 p.m. end time.
THE RICA TEAM will be meeting on Monday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m.
Home Teach Parents will be meeting on either Sunday, February 3 at 11:45 a.m. or Monday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. Please call the RE Office to confirm the date you will be attending.
First Reconciliation: Saturday, February 9, 11:00 a.m. Students and families, please arrive by 10:45 a.m.
Early Childhood: Love Sunday will be observed on February 10; parents please bring children to classroom as usual and plan on joining them in the School cafeteria after Mass.
FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING
Parents of all students preparing for First Communion will meet on Monday, February 11 in the Witzman Center. Fr. Chris will speak to the parents; student books, parent guides, and other materials will be distributed. Two sessions will be held: 4:30-5:30 p.m. and 7:00-8:00 p.m.; please choose the more convenient time. Babysitting provided with reservation-call the RE Office 254-0622.
YOUTH MINISTRY
Souper Bowl Party-9-12th grade teens come out for an afternoon charity challenge. Enjoy lunch then complete in crazy games for monies to donate to your team’s favorite charity. Bring a friend, $5 and a canned good. Sunday, February 3, 1:00-4:00 p.m. WC.
Are You Tuned In? – The annual high school Winter Retreat is coming February 15-17 at Camp Kern. Join youth from Ascension, St. Helen, and St. John Neumann for this peer led retreat. Discount registration deadline February 11. Brochures at church doors.
FISH FRY 2008
Ascension Athletics Fish Fry fundraiser is on Friday, February 1 from 6:00 p.m.-Midnight in the PAC. Presale tickets will be available after all Masses this weekend for $12.00. The cost at the door is $15.00. Tickets may also be purchased at the Parish Office. Carryout is available from 4:30-5:45 p.m. for $7.00. Please come and enjoy a fun night out with great food (prepared by Hecht’s) and games of chance for your entertainment. You must be 21 or older.
WOMEN’S GUILD REMINDER
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for our Mardi Gras Celebration. Women’s Guild will meet on January 30 at 7:30 p.m. After a short business meeting, we will be celebrating an early Mardi Gras. This is a change from our usual first Wednesday of the month meeting date due to Ash Wednesday falling on that date. New faces are always welcome.
ST. VINCENT DEPAUL COLLECTION
Our monthly collection to help the poor and needy will be next weekend. The Vincentians of Ascension will be at the church entrances after all Masses to receive your gift of love and concern.
COLLECTING PALM FOR ASH WEDNESDAY
Parishioners are invited to bring in their palm braches from last year and place them in the containers provided at the church entrances next weekend, February 2-3. The ashes from the burned palm will be blessed and used in church on Ascension Wednesday.
BLASÉ BLESSING
In memory of St. Blasé, the blessing of throats will be given at all Masses next weekend, February 2-3. The blessing will be given as part of the intercessions.
LITTLE BLACK BOOKS
Many parishioners are asking if we will have the Little Black Books for Lent this year. Yes. They are back by popular demand and will be available at the church entrances next weekend.
FR. WITZMAN SCHOLARSHIP AT ASCENSION
The Fr. Witzman Scholarship is available to any student from Ascension Parish planning to attend a Gr. 9-12 Catholic High school next school year. Three (3) scholarships will be awarded for $600 each. Application materials may be obtained by calling or stopping in the Parish, Religious Ed. or School Offices. The application deadline is Monday, March 3.
The Fr. Witzman Scholarship was founded in 1986 with the estate of founding Pastor Arnold Witzman. In addition to the winners of the high school scholarships numerous Ascension families have received elementary school and religious education tuition assistance for the 2007-08 school year through the Witzman Fund.
2008 GOLDEN/SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES
The 2008 Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass for couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary will be held March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Christopher Parish in Vandalia. Couples celebrating their Golden or Silver Wedding Anniversary during 2008 should notify the parish by February 15.

A big thank you to the Secret Knitter. She made fifteen knitted pull-over caps and left them in the bride’s room in a bag marked for St. Vincent DePaul. This is an act of pure Christian charity. We have delivered these to the St. Vincent Hotel where they will keep fifteen needy heads warm this winter.

Parents are encouraged to contact the Parish Office three or four months prior to the birth of their child. A member of the baptismal team will call you and invite you to an instructional class, usually held the first Sunday of the month, 10:00 a.m.-Noon in the Parish Office Building.
