REFLECTION:
We Americans take great pride in being self reliant and independent. And those are good qualities. But as Christians we are also called to look more deeply and acknowledge our dependence on God and each other. As Jesus teaches us the Beatitudes he describes as blessed those people who are poor in spirit, meek, righteous, merciful, clean of heart and who are peacemakers. There is no mention of their wealth or power or status or education. Rather they are known because of the virtuous lives they lead. They live in a way that demonstrates that they have realized that their only strength lies in God. These “blessed” ones also recognize that all humans are creations of the one God and some how interconnected. These virtues of meekness, righteousness, and a desire for peace mold and focus their interactions with and for others. Jesus is calling us to empty ourselves of false values and to allow him to fill our hearts. As we admit our dependence on Almighty God we become blessed and free to love and serve the Lord and each other.

1. Do you believe everyone is welcome in the reign of God? Why or why not?
2. Who is welcome in the reign of God? Who would you like to tell about the reign of God?

PRAYER:
Lord, forgive me for my pride and willfulness. Grant me the graces of humility and gratitude so that I recognize more fully my dependence on you and your people. Amen.
