REFLECTION:
Jesus told a story about two sons whose father directed them to work in the vineyard. One said he wouldn’t but later changed his mind and did as his father had asked. The other son said “yes” but never went to the vineyard. “Which of the two did his father’s will?” asked Jesus. The priests and elders agreed that the one who had said “no” but then actually did the work was the obedient son. The actions of this son demonstrated his loyalty and love for his father and his recognition of his father’s authority over him. It is just as true that our actions reveal much about our commitment to following Christ. The way we treat each other, how we spend our time, how we share our resources all demonstrate to others what is most important to us. Human as we are, none of us is perfect so often we will not in fact follow Jesus’ example as closely as we hope. But remembering the son who first said “no”, we can trust that we will be forgiven for our false steps. Jesus will support us as we commit again and again to living as his devoted followers.
1. When have your actions not measured up to your promises? What was the outcome?
2. Why is it important to follow through on your promises to others?
PRAYER:
Dear Jesus, help me to persist in my commitment to live faithful to your word. Bless my flawed attempts to serve you in loving obedience. Amen
