First Reading: Genesis 9:8-15
Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22
Gospel: Mark 1:12-15
REFLECTION:
Mark tells us that Jesus spent forty days in the desert and then returned to Galilee proclaiming, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.“ What inspiring words to hear as we begin our Lenten journey. Few of us can withdraw from our everyday life for forty days of prayer and fasting but, perhaps, we can carve out of each day some time to reflect and pray about our relationship with God. Perhaps we can open our heart and allow ourselves to welcome the love God so lavishly offers us. Maybe we can reflect honestly on our weaknesses and ask God’s forgiveness for the times we have failed to serve God to the best of our abilities. We may be able to acknowledge our dependence on God and resolve to serve God and God’s people all the days of our lives. If we can somehow make the time to enter fully into this Lenten journey we can hope to arrive at Easter renewed and rejoicing in the love and glory of our God.
1. When or how could you step away from your daily responsibilities to renew yourself, so that you can do a better job of following in the footsteps of Jesus?
2. What good habit could you work on during Lent so you could grow closer to God?
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, be with me throughout this Lent and bless my efforts as I struggle to serve you with faith, humility, and love. Amen
