READINGS
First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19
Second Reading: 1 John 2:1-5a
Gospel: Luke 24:35-48
REFLECTION:
Wasn’t Jesus patient with his disciples? In Luke’s gospel the disciples had already heard that Jesus had risen from the dead. The men who had journeyed to Emmaus with Jesus and had shared a meal with him were among them when “Jesus stood in their midst.“ Yet all of them “were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.“ In order to reassure them Jesus invited them to touch him and he ate some fish with them. He wanted them to understand that he was truly the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Jesus wants each of us to understand, too, that he came to save us. Jesus reaches out to us with this message again and again in the scripture readings at mass but he doesn’t stop there. God may speak to us through things we read or in the words of a homily or in the actions of a friend. God comes to us in the sacraments and in our private devotions. God is indeed patient with us, eager for us to understand that God’s forgiveness is not bound by our limitations or earned by our strengths but given to us freely, patiently.
1. What questions about Jesus still arise in the midst of your faith?
2. What questions would you like to ask someone about Jesus’ appearance to the Apostles?
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, open my mind so that I better understand the words of scripture. Be patient with me as I struggle to listen to your message and follow your word. Amen
