REFLECTION:
As John tells the beautiful story of the multiplication of the loaves and fish he leads us to a clearer understanding of God’s amazing love for us. As the story begins Jesus and the apostles have crossed the Sea of Galilee and gone up the side of the mountain to rest. Jesus looked up and saw the crowd following them. Immediately, concerned for their well-being, Jesus wanted to feed the crowd. Philip thought it was an impossible task and Andrew wondered aloud what good would the few loaves and fish of one young boy do for all these people. Both apostles found out they should never underestimate the power of God’s love. They saw Jesus bless those five barley loaves and two fish and distribute them to everyone present. When all had eaten there were baskets of leftovers. What a sign of God’s abundant love for us! God loves us lavishly and forever, even when we feel least lovable. God offers us what we need – sometimes before we even recognize our need. How can we respond to this extraordinary, freely given love? With grateful hearts, perhaps we can reach out to those around us who hunger for encouragement, support, and acceptance.

1. When has the generous gift of another offered you hope?
2. What loving gift could you give to another person this week?

PRAYER:
Almighty God, I know that you love me unconditionally. Guide me so that my words and actions demonstrate your love to all those around me. Amen
