REFLECTION:
Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, had remarkable faith. As he sat by the side of the road he heard passersby talk about Jesus, the preacher and healer. He was very excited when he realized that Jesus was approaching the spot where he was begging. He began to call out, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” Passersby told Bartimaeus to be quiet, but he continued trying to attract Jesus’ attention. When Jesus sent someone to bring Bartimaeus to him, Bartimaeus stood up, throwing aside his cloak. This cloak must have been precious to this poor beggar but he was so eager to meet Jesus that he left it behind as he went to Jesus. When Jesus asked him what he wanted Bartimaeus responded clearly and simply, “Master, I want to see.” In response to Bartimaeus’ faith Jesus restored his vision. Bartimaeus then joined the crowd following Jesus. We have a lot to learn from Bartimaeus: persistence and bravery in living our faith; willingness to sacrifice; clarity of vision; and persistence in following Jesus. Even in his blindness Bartimaeus saw Jesus as his savior. If only our vision were so clear.
1. What have your eyes of faith helped you see in a new way?
2. What do you like most about the story of Bartimaeus? Why?
PRAYER:
Lord, You are my light, my strength, my guide on my journey to the kingdom. Help me to trust in Your love for me and to accept the help of those You send to support me along the road. Amen
