REFLECTION:
The flight into Egypt must have been a harrowing journey for Mary and Joseph. An angel had alerted Joseph that Herod felt threatened by the infant Jesus and was determined to destroy the child. Joseph, following the angel’s direction, took Mary and the babe to Egypt. Mary and Joseph must have been very fearful for their lives and the life of the precious child entrusted to their care. They were poor people uprooting themselves from their home, leaving behind friends and extended family and heading into a foreign land. Surely they were anxious, not knowing what awaited them in the days ahead. They did reach Egypt and stayed there until after Herod’s death when an angel came again to tell them it was time to return to Israel. What is it that gave them courage and hope through this crisis? Perhaps it was their commitment to life and to family. But maybe even stronger was their willingness to follow where God led them. They listened to God’s messenger, trusting in God’s goodness, even in the midst of fear and anxiety. They were, indeed, a holy family.

1. What can you do this week to help someone in your family feel more secure and loved?
2. What good thing will you do this week to show your love for a parent or grandparent?

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, bless our families, our friends, and neighbors. Heal and strengthen us, O Lord, as we try to serve you in all we think, say and do. Amen
