REFLECTION:
John the Baptist attracted a crowd wherever he went. He had emerged from the desert, preaching a message of repentance and baptizing people in the river. His followers wondered if he were the Messiah. One day an unassuming young man from Nazareth joined the crowd around John and then entered the river to be baptized. Returning to the shore this young man began to pray quietly and suddenly the heavens above him opened and a voice proclaimed, “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.” What a shock this must have been for those who were there to listen to John the Baptist. John had told his followers that he was not himself the Messiah but one who was preparing the way for the Messiah. Many of those present that day began to wonder if Jesus were indeed the Messiah they were expecting. Some trusted the words they heard that day and they began to follow Jesus. We, too, meet God in quiet moments of prayer but also in the dramatic events of our life. In every circumstance we are invited to follow Jesus our Messiah.
1. Describe a time when you have been aware of the presence of God in your life.
2. Do you think that God was “well pleased” by your actions in recent weeks? Why?
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, let me be more aware of your presence in my life. Help me to be more alert to the words and actions of others who will lead me to your truth. Amen
