READINGS
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7
Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11
Gospel: Luke 22:14-23:56
REFLECTION:
As Peter heard the cock crow for the third time he saw Jesus turn to look at him. Peter was horrified as he recalled Jesus’ prediction that he would deny Jesus three times. Jesus’ look confirmed the reality of Peter’s betrayal and the pain it caused Jesus. But Jesus also conveyed forgiveness and understanding. Peter saw Jesus abandoned by his friends, alone in the midst of his enemies, yet reaching out to one who had failed him so miserably. Overcome with shame and guilt Peter wept bitterly. This brief interaction touches our hearts because it is so very human and it offers us so much hope. Who among us hasn’t failed someone we care about? Don’t we empathize with Peter as he realizes the extent of the hurt he has caused? Don’t we remember how it feels to be forgiven when we think we don’t deserve forgiveness? Perhaps, too, we think of times we have forgiven others and the peace that follows forgiveness. And perhaps we pray to have the loving strength to forgive again and to be forgiven.
1. When have you felt that you betrayed the confidence of another, as Peter did when he denied Jesus?
2. When have you let someone down who trusted you? How did you feel?
PRAYER:
Have mercy on me, O God,. In your goodness and compassion forgive my sins and free me of my guilt. Create in me a spirit willing to forgive those who injure me and renew in me the joy of salvation. Amen
