READINGS
First Reading: 2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13
Second Reading: Galatians 2:16, 19-21
Gospel: Luke 7:36-8:3
REFLECTION:
What do you suppose the other guests thought when the woman approached Jesus and began washing his feet with her tears? The host was obviously confused. If Jesus were the prophet he appeared to be surely he knew the woman was a notorious sinner. Why then, did Jesus allow her to kiss and anoint his feet? Shouldn’t he be condemning her and sending her away? Imagine how shocked they all were when Jesus told the woman, “your sins are forgiven…Your faith has saved you; go in peace.“ Some were scandalized that Jesus would be bold enough to claim the power to forgive sins. Who did Jesus think he was? But others perhaps were touched by Jesus’ words, “… her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love.“ These guests recognized themselves as sinners – not as brazen as the woman – but sinners nonetheless. They yearned for the hope of forgiveness that was being offered to them that day. They began to understand that God is compassionate, extending forgiveness freely to all God’s children.
1. Whom does your Christian faith call you to forgive right now? How hard will this be for you?
2. When is it hard for you to forgive someone who has hurt you? What can help you forgive?
PRAYER:
Let me be your servant, Lord, unworthy and sinful as I am. I trust in your compassion and rely on your mercy as I beg you to forgive my sins. Amen
