REFLECTION:
It is easy to imagine Abraham leaping up from his place in front of his tent to welcome the three strangers. He bustled about arranging a comfortable place for them to rest and providing a meal for them. Abraham had surely offered hospitality many times to travelers in those days when journeys were so risky but he seemed to know that these travelers were special. They came from the God Abraham had served all his life. Hospitality is also a value to us today as we try to be open and welcoming to those who are looking for some meaning in life. We hope that our words and actions will somehow invite them to seek Christ. But perhaps Abraham’s story also reminds us that we ourselves must be looking for Christ, ready to welcome him more fully into our lives. He may come to us at any time and any place. We, as good hosts, want to keep our eyes open for his arrival, our ears open for his voice, our will open to his guidance and our hearts receptive to his presence.
1. Which response to God’s call is more natural to you – prayer or action? Why?
2. In the past week, when have you prayed and when have you done good things for others? Which could you do better?
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, as Abraham welcomed you into his life, I welcome you into mine. Stay with me, Lord, that I may hear your word and follow your way always. Amen
