REFLECTION:
When Jesus tells us that in order to enter heaven we must pass through a “narrow gate” it sounds a bit intimidating. And then when Jesus says, “… many … attempt to enter but will not be strong enough“ we wonder whether we have a chance. It is easy to get complacent in our faith so perhaps we should hear these words as a wake-up call. Jesus spent his time on earth teaching and modeling a life of faithful service. We are invited to follow in his footsteps in committing ourselves to the Truth, the Way and the Life. We are expected to make a personal commitment to serve our God and God’s people generously and humbly. As we become more aware of God’s presence in our life, perhaps we can see Jesus as “the narrow gate” and the gate becomes less a barrier and more the access to heaven. It is only through Christ’s suffering and death that our salvation is possible. We come to the gate as one in a long line of flawed, hope-filled believers who have lived and trusted in the unlimited mercy and love of God.
1. What responsibilities must you meet, in order to enter through the narrow door? What does Jesus’ own example teach you?
2. Name a time when you took the easy way out rather than the better course of action.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, lead me to the narrow gate. Help me to focus on you who are the beginning and the end. Amen
