REFLECTION:
Those of us with modest means may read the scriptural admonitions to the rich with a certain smugness as though the words do not apply to us. Yet, if we read carefully the story of the rich man and Lazarus, we see that Luke is speaking to all of us. The rich man is not criticized for being rich, but for being unwilling to share his wealth with the poor at his door. Few of us meet face to face with anyone in dire need. We see on TV and in magazines, pictures of people living in poverty or people whose homes and livelihood are destroyed by natural disasters or civil disorder. But it is so easy to forget them and their need when we change the channel or close the magazine. When we do remember we often make excuses that the little we have to share isn’t enough to make a difference. But is that Christ’s way? Doesn’t Jesus invite us to share as generously as we can, whether it is a lot or a little, and trust that he will make it sufficient? Isn’t this what the children of God do for each other?

1. What are the “rewards” of caring for the needs of the poor?
2. What is one thing you and your family could do this week to help those who are poor or sick?

PRAYER:
Grant me a generous heart, O Lord. Teach me to respond with love and kindness to the needs of others. Amen
