St. Vincent de Paul

Church of the Ascension Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society

St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) is part of an international Christian community founded in Paris in 1833. SVDP is committed to offering emergency assistance with utilities, clothing, furniture and other services to our neighbors in need. Our conference for the most part covers the parish boundaries.

Our mission is to bear witness to Christ and His Church by assisting families materially and spiritually on a person-to-person basis.

Our ministry includes:

  • Home visitation to those in need.
  • Helping with household expenses as needed (gas, electric, water, rent, and other needs).

Our conference is one of over 30 in the Dayton District Council. Our conference members are called Vincentians and we meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 7:00 PM at the parish office. Meetings are about one hour long and focus on the spirituality of our ministry and discussions of current and planned programs along with the disbursement of our financial help to those in need.

New members are always welcome. We are always seeking additional volunteers. We have many capacities that help us serve our neighbors. We emphasize assisting others with dignity and promoting self-sufficiency whenever possible. We will provide training and plenty of time for you to discern whether the Spirit is calling you to our ministry.

If you are interested, please leave a message on our Help Line at 937-253-5171 x106 and one of our members will respond to your call.

QUARTERLY summary 3/31/2025

The Ascension parishioners generous support of our neighbors during this last quarter continues to demonstrate the strong tradition of a caring and sharing Parish.  During this past quarter, the Ascension Conference members responded to 144 calls for assistance, logging 243 service hours and 672 miles.  Our conference provided assistance to 48 households and 87 of our neighbors.  The Conference provided 14 rental payments and made payments for 34 households with past due utility notices.  The Conference also provided furniture vouchers, gas cards, and appliance assistance to our neighbors.  While there are many calls for assistance, I would like to bring to your attention 2 calls for assistance.  The first, we received from our neighbor Beth.  A local factory employee, she lost her job after 16 years in a plant shutdown in 2022.  While she attempted to find another job, she ran through unemployment, then her 401(K).  She worked for a while, but lost that job in December of 2024.  Struggling with her health, she is undergoing medical treatment so she can return to work.  Beth needed assistance with both her electric and gas bill.  She had been on a payment plan, but ran short of funds and had received a disconnect notice for gas and was in danger of falling out of her plan for electric.  One of our members was quickly able to assess the situation and make contact with the utility companies and provide payments to prevent the  disconnect and continue the electric plan program.  Beth was overwhelmed by your support and assistance.  On another household, we received a call from a family that was facing a number of financial issues.  Bob was out of work as a brick layer.  His mother had recently passed and the care for his developmentally disabled younger brother was passed on to him.  Bob had several large utility

bills in need of payment.  One of our conference members was able to guide Bob through the process to set up payment plans.  Assistance was made for his gas bill to start the program.  The family was very grateful for the support the Ascension Conference provided.  We are always seeking additional volunteers.  We have many roles that help us serve our neighbors.  We will provide training and plenty of time for you to discern whether the Lord is calling you to our ministry.  If you are interested, please leave a message on our Help Line at 937-253-5171 x106 and one of our members will respond to your call.  The continued generosity of the Ascension parish enables the Conference to assist our neighbors in need.  Your support continues the strong Ascension tradition of caring and serving others.  Your contributions are making a difference in supporting our neighbors.  The Ascension Conference is very grateful for your support.

May God bless you and your family.
